You know you’re a fiscal sponsor. But are you accounting for it correctly?
If your 501(c)(3) holds other projects under its umbrella, each one must be tracked as its own restricted fund, and the admin fee booked as an internal inter-fund charge — not service revenue. Most bookkeepers don’t know these rules exist. The error stays invisible until an audit, a funder request, or a dispute — and proposed IRS changes to the Form 990 would require clearer project-level reporting. We keep fiscal-sponsor books clean at the project level, so they hold up when it counts.
